Abstract:
The purpose of the study was to investigate the school-based instructional supervision practices and challenges in government secondary schools of West Hararghe Zone. This study was conducted in 67 samples using simple random sampling, comprehensive and purposive sampling techniques, with descript research design. For this study, from the 3 woreda and 1 administrative town five secondary schools were selected through stratified sampling techniques. The data analyzed using mixed research methods. Questionnaires, interviews and document analysis were used to gather data. The data were tabulated and analyzed quantitatively using frequency, mean and standard deviation qualitatively data were interpreted using verbal description. The finding of the study showed that the supervisors did not play their roles expected of them. The teacher’s perception did not go in line with the intentions and principles of supervision teachers have negative attitude towards supervision. The major problems that affect supervisory practices in the school were: lack of participatory approach, lack of proper training and awareness of instructional supervision. Absence of regular classroom observation, procedure, and need based training at school, pre and post observation conference were not provided and. Lack of classroom observation throughout the time allocated and teachers resist against the supervisor activities. It can conclude Supervisors did not facilitate learning teaching activities. It can be conclude from these that supervisors did not provide the necessary support for teachers, therefor, the teaching learning process did not make progress to desired level and the improvement of instruction did not make regarding to the importance of school based instructional supervision. It is recommended that teachers, principals and department heads should be well oriented and trained in supervision. The school should provide relevant and sufficient training about instructional supervision and Clear concepts on objectives, principles, functions and consequently on the techniques of school based supervision should be stated in the school for each teachers, supervisors make agreement on the points which should be observed
