Abstract:
The purpose of the study was to explore the practice of group-based teaching and learning in speaking classes in the case of grade ten students at Addis Alem Secondary and Preparatory School. The research was employed using mixed methods design and data were gathered through classroom observations, interview and questionnaire. The participants of the study were only four English teachers selected purposively because they were small in number who have been teaching in grade ten and forty five students from the same grade level were selected by using random sampling techniques. The findings of the study also revealed that English teachers who have been currently teaching in the school have good awareness towards Group-based teaching learning due to its significance. However, the actual practice was different from the reality because most of the time teachers apply lecture method rather than group-based learning and the awareness of the students on group-based learning were not good since they did not effectively practice group activities. Finally, it is recommended that teachers should attempted to overcome the hindrances faced through the teaching learning process as much as it is possible to show their effort for learners. Besides this, teachers and students should develop a sense of commitment, responsibility and try to alleviate the factors behind less participation of students during Group-based teaching learning in speaking class.
