The main objective of this study was to assess the impact of large class on implementing
SCL in teaching speaking skills. Student centered refers to a learning approach in which stu
dents influence the content activities, materials and ways of learning. The participants of the
study were 30 Grade 12 students and four English language teachers from the selected
study area. The students were selected using simple random sampling technique whereas purposive sampling technique was used for the English language teachers. Close–ended
questions were prepared for students whereas open-ended questions were prepared for
teachers. Three data gathering instruments were used such as questionnaire, interview and
observation. Quantitative data was collected using questionnaires and were analyzed
using numbers and percentages in a table form and observation was collected using
qualitative data and analyzed in qualitative form such descriptions and narrations. English
teachers faced difficulties to implementing the various techniques of active learning such as
group discussion, jigsaw, debate, role play and pair work, unable to support all level of
learners and were not able to use the allotted time properly. Students had lack of self
motivation and self-confidence, did not get chance to express their ideas and had not
enough time to practice communication. However, the teachers were doing their best to
apply SCL although it was difficult to implement it effectively and properly, arranged
students to discuss in groups and nominated for each group as a leader were the findings of
the research. |
