Abstract:
This study was conducted to investigating factors that affecting students, participation in group work during speaking lesson. It was conducted in Jamma Degollo secondary and preparatory school in south wollo zone. For the purpose of this research, fortify (40) grade 11 students and three (3) English teachers have participated. So as to collect the necessary data questionnaire, interview, and classroom observation were used. The data which is collected with questionnaire were analyzed quantitatively scales and percentages. The data collected through interview and classroom observation were analyzed qualitatively .Therefore, the results obtained from questionnaire, interview, and classroom observation were considered together in the analyses. The results of the data suggested that personal factors like language anxiety, cultural background of their learning experience at lower grade and low English ability have affected their participation. In addition to this, situational factors like seating arrangement, group composition, clarity of speaking tasks, group size are some of the factors that affect student’s participation during group work. On the other way, classroom teachers role in the target lesson were poor in terms of composing the group, the way they give feedback method of group formation are some of the factors that affect student participation. Generally, since situation factors have their own factors on learning’s participation during group work, English teachers should try to present and introduce the target lesson based on learner’s level of understanding
