Abstract:
This study tried to assess teachers’ and students’ practice and perceptions about using
literary texts in teaching and learning reading skills. The study was conducted in dukem
preparatory school in Grade 11, with a population of three teachers and 80 students. The
data for the study was collected using quantitatively and qualitatively. A total of three
teachers and 75 students were responded to the questionnaire, 2 classes were observed and
all the teachers and 20 students were interviewed. The teachers’ and students’ practice and
perceptions conducted in the literary text lessons were identified while the reasons why they
avoided or employed the literary texts in teaching reading were clarified. The finding of this
research revealed that it was easy to generalize the teachers and the students ‘perceptions
towards literary texts and its practice in teaching and learning reading skill in the
classrooms
