dc.description.abstract The purpose of this study was to investigate the motivational strategies used by EFL teachers at Chiro Gola secondary school during speaking lessons using games. To achieve the objective, a mixed methods design was used. For this study, 106 (20%) of grade 9 students and 4 English teachers were taken as sample subjects. To select the subjects from students, simple random sampling technique was used. As to the teachers, purposive sampling was used to include in the study. To gather valuable information from the subjects, classroom observation, questionnaire for students and teachers, and interview for teachers were the instruments used to collect data for the study .And the data was analyzed by using frequency count, percentage and descriptive statistical methods. The findings showed that the teachers never used games in the classrooms for teaching speaking and they did not present speaking lesson with clear audition and motivation way. On the contrary, grade nine English teachers: provided students with positive information feedback and encouraged students even they make mistakes in speaking activities. Also they had a good relationship with students in the classroom. From the findings it was possible to say that teachers did not using efforts to use games and did not engage their students to practice games in their classrooms. The findings of the study also showed that the effort of English teachers to create conductive and motivating learning environment is in question mark. Moreover, teachers‟ consistent attempts to encourage students while teaching speaking skills still needs improvement. And teachers do not encourage students to apply their English language proficiency in the real-life situations; even they know the use of games they didn‟t apply in teaching speaking lessons. Based on the above mentioned findings and conclusions appropriate recommendations have been forwarded. en_US
