The purpose of this study was focus in communicative language teaching (CLT) in EFL) setting to
improve students’ abilities to use English in real context, The purpose of this study was to investigate
challenges in the implementation of CLT in EFL class The study used descriptive survey method/design.
The subject of the study was grade 7 and 8 English teachers and students. The number of teachers were
eighteen (18) and students 162 respectively. Three (3) government Primary schools were involved.
Teachers and students were selected using purposive and random sampling techniques respectively.
The data gathering tools were questionnaires, interview, and classroom observation check list. Then the
data were analyzed using percentage, mean value, theme, categorize, the finding of the study revealed
that communicative language teaching was not properly implemented in the sample school due to various
factors. The major factors were lack of training and insufficient tools for teaching English through CLT,
Lack of effective and efficient assessment instrument in CLT.; poor background in the English language,
introvert nature of the students, less exposer of English atmosphere, traditional grammar based
examination and little time available to prepare communicative material , traditional method of teaching
Therefore it is recommended, the Ministry of Education and other concerned bodies (e.g. ICDR) should
organize successive workshops, seminars and in-service trainings so that teachers can get the chance to
share experiences on how to cope with the existing problems in primary |
