dc.description.abstract This study was carried out with the purpose of the investigating the implementation of content based instruction in teaching reading skill in grade ten in EFL context .To achieve this objectives ,mixed ( quantitative and qualitative)research method was employed. To gather the necessary data 200 students and four (4) English language teachers who have been teaching in the ten level were selected as a participant .To collect the data the researcher used random and purposive sampling technique were used to select the participants, the random sampling were used to select the teachers for the interview and purposive sampling techniques were used to select the students for the questionnaires. The data were gathered through semi-structured interview, questionnaires and document analysis (grade 10 textbook) According ,the qualitative data obtained from interview, textbook analysis were analyzed in words ,where as the other quantitative data obtained through questionnaire were analyzed by using frequency ,percentage and mean score in the form of table .Hence , in order to make the holistic picture of both the qualitative and quantitative data obtained through interview, and questionnaire ,the researcher integrated and discussed them all jointly under specific topics related to the research questions. Based on the analysis made, the major finding of the study were summarized as follows, The finding of the textbook analysis revealed that the text book was prepared based on the consent based instruction .It was prepared aiming at developing learner overall language use or communicative competence .As analysis of the reading lesson implies, the reading text activities were based on the topic taken from other textbooks or academic subjects .They are topics based in order to make the students more familiar to the unit contents and exposed them to a lot of language items .That is as the content were directly linked or related with academic texts, they can help learners to learn various academic functions of the language and acquire content knowledge which can help them for academic success .Moreover ,the majority of content lessons asked learners to work cooperatively being in pair or group .However, the result from the teachers’ interview and students questionnaire show that CBI was not practiced by teachers in teaching regarding to the level the textbook and syllabus required .Although there were few attempts to implement the approach in teaching reading by few teachers but it was not adequate .The students were also reluctant to participate in the content based reading activities as they did not have positive perception of the study. Furthermore, these tools also indicated there were some challenges that hampered the effective implementation of the approach in teaching reading, as example, lack of adequate practice based teachers’ training, students reluctant to work cooperatively en_US
