Abstract:
The main objective of this study was to investigate The Practice of Teaching and Learning English Vocabulary in Grade Nine of Jarso and Ahmed Imam Secondary Schools, East Hararghe Zone, Regional State Of Oromia.The researcher focused mainly on the teachers‟ role, students‟ role, the techniques and activities used by the teachers.The researcher used quantitative and qualitative methods as well as various instruments were used. These were students‟ and teachers‟ questionnaire, classroom observation, and teachers‟ and students‟ interview. The gathered data was categorized though quantitative and qualitative methods by changing it out of 100; then, analyzed descriptively. The findings depicted that there was a gap between the teacher‟s knowledge on the theory of vocabulary teaching in EFL classes and the problem of curriculum design that it had not been given attention for vocabulary skills. There was ignorance of the principles and techniques of teaching-learning vocabulary that were used inappropriately in the mentioned grades level. Researcher observed that teachers were using the traditional way of vocabulary teaching and learning which had been little or no attention given for it as indispensable. To that end, this research paper provided recommendations that could bring about a change of methods of teaching and learning vocabulary in the above grades level so that modern techniques and strategies of teaching and learning vocabulary with well practiced testing and assessing methods should be employed.
