Abstract:
The main purpose of this study was to assess Vocabulary Teaching and Learning Strategies Use 
of Grade 10 Teachers and Student of Three Selected Secondary Schools in Boke Woreda, West 
Harerge Zone. To this end, the study employed descriptive survey deign, which involves both 
quantitative and qualitative methods. To achieve the objectives of the study 5 English Language 
Teachers and 45 students participated. The main data gathering instrument such as; 
observation, interview and questionnaire were employed to analyze the data. Thus, descriptive
survey design using frequencies and percentages were employed in analyzing the quantitative 
data analyzed quantitatively whereas the qualitative data were analyzed thematically. On the 
other hand, data from teachers’ and students’ interview were analyzed qualitatively based on the 
thematic analysis. Hence, the study indicated that the teachers and students didn’t use different 
types of vocabulary teaching and learning strategies use in EFL classes according to their 
suitability. In addition, the study revealed that they rarely practiced these strategies during 
vocabulary instruction. Moreover, the practices of vocabulary teaching and learning strategies 
use were not given sufficient attention at three selected Secondary Schools. 
The findings of the study revealed that teachers and students teach and learn vocabulary but 
they did not practice different vocabulary teaching and learning strategies. Teachers and 
Students mainly gave emphasis on guessing from context, dictionary strategy and asking 
classmates vocabulary learning strategies than other kinds of strategies in their vocabulary 
learning strategies such as antonym, synonyms, analyzing parts of speech, using flash cards, 
using English media illustration, tree diagram, were almost neglected by teachers and students.
Finally, recommendations were drawn based on the above findings.
